The Bundaberg Jobs Commitment is all about connecting employers with our youth to inspire and assist them in making decisions to pursue a life that includes work and education after they leave school.

The program was created to address the Bundaberg region’s high youth unemployment and disengagement rates.

The Commitment is based upon internationally recognised research by Dr. Anthony Mann which concludes that ‘the more youth encounter employers whilst in school [4 or more often being cited] the more they earn, and the lower their chances of becoming NEET [No longer in Employment, Education or Training] as young adults.’

You can read more about Dr. Mann's findings here.

The Commitment provides employer-led opportunities for our youth to experience positive exposure to the industry, mentors, and other forms of career inspiration that will make a difference in their pathway to work or further education.

It aims to ensure that as youth in our region leave school, they have a clear understanding of available career opportunities, along with enough support and experiences to make informed choices that lead them on a pathway to employment.

In October 2020, all secondary schools in the Bundaberg local government area signed a charter document committing to providing opportunities for youth to engage with local industry representatives who will inspire students about their future and give them every opportunity to succeed. You can see the signed Charter here and the photos in the Photo Gallery.

We are calling on all local employers to participate in the Bundaberg Jobs Commitment.

As Head of Department (Maths) for Bundaberg North State High School, I am always looking for ways to engage students with the community and for students to see uses of maths in reality. Through this action I hope students set themselves career goals to achieve for the future.

Through the Bundaberg Jobs Commitment we have been able to engage with IT professionals, professional engineers, certified valuers and university lecturers who have interacted with our students through a variety of activities. We have had an immerse day involving the whole of Year 8 building a bridge in a competition linked to... Continue reading

Bundaberg Jobs Commitment is a valuable platform that can provide the opportunity for collaborative learning partnerships to cultivate connectivity with local industry providers and experts as young individuals face a challenging world. Through development of the charter and the collective engagement of all committed parties there should be a deeper understanding for young people of real world connections, the changing landscape of career pathway choices and a strategy for powerful change.

A meaningful partnership to help youth become real-world job ready!

by Sugarland Animal Hospital, almost 3 years ago

Our business has been an active part of the Bundaberg Jobs Commitment, attending regular resume building workshops at local schools, holding mock interviews for students and taking on a number of work experience and traineeship students.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our participation in the program and have, in return, had some very positive additions to our team who were found through these traineeships and work placements.

Through participating in the events organised by Jobs Commitment, we have been able to help shape the future workforce of Bundaberg and give back to our community in a way that will have significant... Continue reading

    Bundaberg Jobs Commitment

I commenced my involvement with this wonderful initiative in July 2020. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working alongside some inspiring individuals that have the same passion to see the Bundaberg youth unemployment rate improve through great programs like this. I have had the pleasure of working closely with the local high schools to inspire the youth in our community to want to better themselves through gaining life long employment.

This program has highlighted the importance of our youth being exposed to business representatives to better their skills and knowledge around the workforce.

If you are thinking of jumping on... Continue reading

Our organisation is proud to support the Bundaberg Jobs Commitment program run by BRC. As a region with high levels of youth unemployment it is great to see council taking initiative to promoting positive change. Our experience is that businesses want to help but often don’t know where to start or how to contribute. This program makes it really easy for us to help promote positive change.

by Jesse Zielke JRZ Homes, almost 3 years ago
I have been involved in the jobs commitment for around 1 year and the engagement of the students in all of the schools has been really good. I have been sharing my story and potential pathways to employment in the construction sector and if it helps 1 disengaged young person to begin employment then i feel it is a job well done. The Jobs Commitment team make it easy as possible for me to fit in these education seminars with my busy schedule to assist with this great council initiative. Keep up the great work team!
