Nielson Park is one of the Bundaberg Region’s premier beachside recreation parks, featuring a variety of facilities including a skate bowl, picnic shelters, a toilet block, and junior and senior play areas.

The popular destination park, frequented by both locals and visitors all year-round, provides access to the Nielson Park Bathing Reserve and is home to the Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club and Bargara Park Run.

Nielson Park has been identified for upgrade and development as part of Bundaberg Regional Council’s Parks and Open Space Strategy 2019-2026.

This summer Council is inviting the community to provide feedback so a concept Masterplan for the park can be developed.

We want to hear about what you’d like to see in the park, and how the park can continue to be a popular destination for locals and holidaymakers alike, as it has for decades. Fill out the online survey here or contact Council for a paper copy.

You can also use the Places tool to give us your suggestions. You can plot your ideas on the map and even add photos of ideas you like. Try it here.

You are invited to attend a Community Consultation Day on Saturday 15 January and speak to Council staff and our project consultant about what upgrades would benefit you, your family, and the wider community.

After the community consultation, a draft of the Concept Design will then be shared with the community.

Residents are encouraged to have a say on an exciting masterplan for Nielson Park that aims to better facilitate and reinvigorate the popular area.

The Bargara location is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike and has long been a hub for recreational activities and social gatherings.

Recognising its significance, Council has identified the need to develop a masterplan for Nielson Park to ensure its future development aligns with the community's needs and aspirations.

The masterplan will guide future developments within the park, ensuring they are undertaken in a deliberate and structured manner to cater to the community's evolving requirements.

Bundaberg Region Mayor Jack Dempsey said over the years Council had actively sought feedback from the community to shape the vision for a modern, inclusive, and functional area at Nielson Park.

“Engagement with community groups, families, and individuals helped Council gain valuable insights and perspectives,” he said.

“Now, we are excited to share a draft concept masterplan for Nielson Park.

“This plan reflects the collective input received from the community and presents a vision for the park's future.”

    Nielson Park masterplan needs feedback

Mayor Dempsey emphasised the importance of community participation in this process.

“We value the opinions and ideas of our community members,” he said.

“This is an opportunity for everyone to have a say and further contribute to a cherished community space.”

To actively engage with the draft concept masterplan and provide feedback, residents are encouraged to participate in an online survey, available here.

“Your insights will help us in the creation of a vibrant and functional park that will continue to be a treasured asset for generations to come,” Mayor Dempsey said.

The survey is open on the Our Bundaberg Region website until Friday 16 July.

The Nielson Park masterplan has been undertaken under Bundaberg Regional Council’s Parks and Open Space Strategy 2019 – 2026.

Nielson Park has been identified for an upgrade as part of Bundaberg Regional Council’s Parks and Open Space Strategy 2019-2026.

One of the region’s most popular coastal recreation spaces is set to be rejuvenated and the community is being invited to have a say on how Nielson Park, Bargara should be utilised into the future.

A well-loved area by locals and visitors alike, Nielson Park has been identified as a space to be revitalised as part of Bundaberg Regional Council’s Parks Capital Works Program 2021 – 2022.

The first stage of the upgrade project will see Council gather information and ideas from the community through surveys and consultation sessions, which will help to shape the concept design for the space.

Parks and Gardens portfolio spokesperson Cr Wayne Honor said the project aimed to improve on the current offering of the idyllic beachside area for all to enjoy.

“Nielson Park has always been a very popular spot for locals and visitors alike and people have been enjoying this spot for many, many years,” he said.

“In fact, it has played host to many community events, including the popular Railway Picnic from the 1920s onwards.

“This event saw thousands of people enjoying the beach and park area each year and even became the number one spot for the iconic Siren of the Surf competitions, which were a main component of the picnic until 1972.”

Cr Honor said with large stretches of green space perfectly complementing the beautiful nearby beach, there was plenty of room for the area to be revitalised into a modern, inclusive and functional park to be enjoyed for many more years to come.

“The popular destination park is not only a hit with beachgoers and holiday-makers, but it is also home to the Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club, Bargara Park Run and many other community groups,” Cr Honor said.

“It is not often that one of our major parks is subject to such extensive revitalisation and so we are looking for as much feedback as possible from these groups and residents about what should come out of this significant project.

“By enhancing Nielson Park, we hope to ensure the community can continue to enjoy this beautiful natural area into the future.”

The public is invited to have a say by attending a community consultation session at Nielson Park on Saturday 15 January 2022 between 9am and noon.

“This is an opportunity to meet the project team and provide your feedback on how you use the park, and what facilities you believe would be beneficial to the community,” Cr Honor said.

“If you are unable to attend this event you can still contribute by completing the online survey.”

The survey is open to the public until Sunday, 23 January and can be completed by visiting the website here.

The concept design will be finalised by the end of June 2022.

You can stay up to date with this project, and complete the survey online, via the Our Bundaberg Region website.

You can contact the parks team with any questions by emailing parksadministration@bundaberg.qld.gov.au.
