With support of the Queensland Government under the ActiveKIT Program, Bundaberg Regional Council is delivering the Active and Healthy Bundaberg Program (the Program) as a means to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Building a Healthy Bundaberg Alliance (the Alliance). The Program aims to increase physical activity in adults who participate in the Program.

Council is developing a model whereby a diverse set of providers collaborate as part of a network of health and wellbeing ‘champions’ to bring about changes not only in how people perceive and participate in physical activity, but also the supporting factors (i.e., nutrition, behaviour change, mental wellbeing) that influence this perception. The objective is to deliver a full-service program that encourages and increases the level of physical activity among Program participants.

How can I take part in the Program?

Council is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from interested residents across the Bundaberg Region. The primary demographic is adults aged 25-35, experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, with a focus on female engagement. Depending on Program demand and participation, Council may likely consider applicants outside of this demographic and encourages all interested parties to apply.

Expressions of interest for the Active and Healthy Bundaberg Cohort 3 program will open on Monday 18 July and close on Sunday 24 July at 5pm

EOIs can be submitted online here.

How does the Program Work?

The Program begins with Participants undertaking independent health assessments within the three Program categories of physical, nutrition and mental wellbeing. The output of the assessments then informs the development of customised health and wellbeing ”scripts”. Where appropriate, Participants who are found (during the assessments) to have increased risk due to underlying or pre-existing health conditions will be referred to their respective general practitioner (GP) prior to commencing the Program.

After completing the assessments and scripts, the panel of Suppliers guide their respective “clients” through a 12-week program that covers the three principal categories noted above. The Program structure and activities are expected to be equitably distributed across the 12 weeks (i.e., four weeks will be allocated to each of the three categories of physical, nutrition, and mental wellbeing). The goal is to increase physical activity levels, supported by proper nutrition and complementary aspects of wellbeing that assist with positive behaviour change.

What kind of services will be provided under the Program?

Health and wellbeing services will broadly fall under the categories of physical health, nutrition, and mental wellbeing. Examples of services that will be available include:

  • Exercise within a gym or similar functional fitness environment
  • Whole of body strength and cardio training
  • Yoga
  • Nutrition
  • Meditation or mindfulness
  • Naturopathy
  • Personal Training
  • Hypnotherapy

How much does the program cost?

The program is free for all participants.

When is the Program running?

With two successful Cohort Programs (each 24 participants) already delivered, Council is now pleased to announce that a third Cohort Program (24 participants) will now be offered:

Start Date: 29 August, 2022

End date: 20 November, 2022

Where will the activities be held?

Workshops and consultations will be facilitated either in person or online via videoconference. All in person consultations will take place in the Bundaberg Region either at the health and wellbeing provider’s premises or at a designated Council facility.

This project is funded by the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Health and Wellbeing Queensland under the ActiveKIT program.
