Our Stories Our Places Heritage and Character Grant Program
Council has established a grant program to assist owners of heritage buildings to preserve our history for future generations.
Our Stories Our Places Heritage and Character Grant Program provides a means for Council to deliver financial assistance to owners of eligible heritage listed and main street commercial character properties to undertake sympathetic conservation works to improve the appearance of these buildings and make a positive contribution to the streetscape.
Under this grant program, Council may contribute 50% (dollar-for-dollar) toward eligible conservation works up to a maximum contribution by Council of $10,000 per project (excluding GST).
Our Stories Our Places - 2025 / 2026
The current round of funding under the Our Stories Our Places Heritage and Character Grant Program seeks to assist owners of eligible properties to undertake: -
- conservation works on local heritage places that are or were formerly residential dwellings, and
- improvements to signage and repainting the exterior of commercial character buildings within the traditional main streets of Bundaberg and Childers.
Applications for the grant program open 1 August 2025 and will be received on an on-going basis within the application period which closes 31 May 2026, unless the allocated budget is exhausted sooner.
Please carefully read the grant policy and guideline prior to lodging an application for funding.

Application information
Please carefully read the grant guideline which identifies the information required to be submitted with a funding application for this grant program.
Prior to lodging a funding application, it is necessary for you to contact Council's Regional Growth and Development team to book an initial onsite meeting and receive preliminary advice confirming the information required to be submitted with the application. Council officers will also provide you with information about eligibility, the application process, and whether there are any development approvals required for your proposal.
Projects subject to a funding application must not commence prior to approval of the funding by Council.
Assessment process
Once submitted, Council’s Regional Growth and Development team will assess the application against the guideline and assessment will be based on the merit of the application. This assessment will then be referred to the Heritage Advisory Committee (HAC) for the Committee to make a recommendation to Council about the funding application. Council will then decide to approve or refuse the application by Council resolution. Applicants will be formally notified of this decision.
Implementation
Successful applicants are required to enter into a funding agreement with Council which stipulates the amount of funding allocated by Council, conditions and requirements for complying with the funding agreement, timeframes for completion of the project, and the process for acquittal of the grant.
Unless the funding agreement nominates a different period for completion of the works, the works must be substantially completed within 12 months of the applicant receiving formal notification of funding approval from Council, otherwise funding will be forfeited.
Grants are made as payment to the applicant following the work being undertaken in accordance with the funding agreement.
