Libraries new strategic plan to empower residents

Enhancing community access to knowledge and resources has taken a significant step forward as Bundaberg Regional Council adopted its new five-year strategic plan for local libraries earlier this year.

The comprehensive plan outlines a roadmap for the development and improvement of library services across the Bundaberg Region, reflecting Council's commitment to advancing literacy, education, and community engagement.

Through its strategic plan Bundaberg Regional Libraries will focus on developing more adult programs while supporting creativity and culture through a range of programs and services.

Bundaberg Regional Council Arts, Heritage and Asset Management portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said both internal and external consultation, including a community survey in May last year, had assisted with the development of the five-year plan and identified a number of priorities.

“The strategic plan is to address gaps in our existing service and underpin Council’s decision-making to help focus on our future,” Cr Learmonth said.

“One of the key objectives will be to develop and deliver non-technology programs or sessions for adults that foster opportunities for recreation, socialisation, and learning.

“Another objective is to encourage engagement and collaboration from community to design programming that is relevant and of interest to community members.”

Strategic plan promotes literacy and learning

Bundaberg Regional Libraries Strategic Plan for 2024-2029 places a strong emphasis on promoting literacy and lifelong learning initiatives within the community.

Cr Learmonth said the importance of building relationships with the local First Nations community to provide a solid foundation to drive future engagement and collaboration was also highlighted as a top priority.

“We will ensure our libraries are welcoming spaces by supporting relationship building between Libraries and the First Nations community which will lead to a foundation of cultural awareness and encourage future collaborations,” he said.

“Through targeted programs, partnerships and a diverse range of cultural and educational events, Council aims to empower residents of all ages to pursue knowledge and personal growth, while contributing to the overall wellbeing and prosperity of the community.”
