Consultation has concluded

Figtree Chapel is in the iconic Bundaberg Botanic Gardens in North Bundaberg. This outdoor area contains seating and tables set amongst large mature fig trees. The area can be booked for weddings, community group meetings and events.

In keeping with community expectations and to enhance the existing facilities the Chapel will undergo an upgrade to modernise and re-fresh the space.

The current seating, lighting, fountain and pavers will be removed, and new seating and decking will be installed.

Work will be undertaken sensitively around the fig trees and surrounding vegetation.

The Figtree Chapel upgrade is an initiative of the Queensland Government.

Access into the Botanic Gardens through the pedestrian gate on Young Street will remain open for most of the project but will require a brief closure.

UPDATE: The Fig Tree Chapel has now been refurbished and is ready for your visit.

Work to upgrade Bundaberg Botanic Garden's Fig Tree Chapel is underway, updating the popular wedding ceremony site to include new decking, seating and more.

The chapel, located opposite Café 1928, is a popular spot at the gardens, offering a shady, peaceful and relaxing space surrounded by beautiful fig trees.

Botanic Gardens and Horticulture Area Supervisor Cody Johnson said the work would revitalise the chapel, providing a modern area for ceremonies set against the backdrop of stunning natural surroundings.

He said work would be ongoing for the next few months.

“This week the fountain will be de-installed and next week the pavers will be removed,” Cody said.

“Lighting will also be removed and the bricks will remain.

“New decking and seating will be installed providing a refreshed look for this space.”

Cody said work would be undertaken sensitively around the fig trees and surrounding vegetation.

“The area will be blocked off for safety reasons and the project is expected to be finalised by 1 June this year,” he said.

“Access through the pedestrian gate on Young St will remain open for most of the project, but will require a brief closure.

“Signage is on site to let visitors know what work is taking place.”

For those wishing to use the chapel area for upcoming nuptials, Cody said bookings could be made once the area is open to the public.
