Charities spread festive cheer with appeal funds
Share Charities spread festive cheer with appeal funds on Facebook Share Charities spread festive cheer with appeal funds on Twitter Share Charities spread festive cheer with appeal funds on Linkedin Email Charities spread festive cheer with appeal funds linkMayor Helen Blackburn joined the hamper packing efforts at Salvation Army Bundaberg and said it was evident the money raised would help a lot of people in the region.
“Now that the hampers have been prepared and are being distributed, it’s wonderful to see the tangible benefits of the fundraising,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Local charities work hard all year long to support those in need in the community, and helping to provide that bit extra at Christmas is very rewarding.”
Salvation Army Bundaberg Major Chris Millard said the organisation had seen an increase in need this year and was preparing to distribute around 200 hampers.
“A lot more people are struggling with cost of living than before,” Chris said.
“While a lot can keep paddling and somehow managing throughout the year, saving up for Christmas is just not possible for most.
“Help with some food for a nice Christmas Day and some toys for children mean there can be something to celebrate.”
Chris said the Salvation Army were thankful for the ongoing support and generosity of the Bundaberg community.
“Knowing that everything collected stays within our community is a reminder of the power of local kindness and compassion,” he said.
“The holiday season is about coming together, sharing kindness, and supporting those in need.
“We could not do what we do without the support of the Bundaberg Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and the generosity of the local community.”
Citicoast Church Senior Pastor Joey Ryan said Citicoast Pantry would distribute over 300 hampers this year.
“The hampers are given out to people who register for hardship at our Citicoast Pantry,” Joey said.
“We also receive submissions from different services around the city like Impact Services and Edon House on behalf of their clients.
“We hope to support anyone in need this Christmas with these hampers, we say ‘it’s from our heart to your table’.”
Joey said Citicoast Church congregation members also donated funds towards the hampers, and the combined funding allowed them to reach further into the community.
“We are aware of the financial pressures this time of year and all that comes with Christmas,” she said.
“We want people in our city to feel seen and supported and these hampers do that.
“We see people tear up as they collect the hamper, knowing what it will do for their family.”
The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal raises funds through donations, sponsorship and fundraising events to provide extra support at Christmas to people in need in the community.
Council partners with local charities across the region to ensure the hampers and vouchers are distributed appropriately.
While fundraising for this year’s appeal has been finalised, community can help ensure next Christmas is a little brighter by supporting the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal Caravan Raffle.
Tickets in the raffle to win a brand new caravan valued at $69,990 are on sale until Easter at Bundaberg Services Club.
There are only 1,000 tickets available, at a cost of $100 per ticket, giving participants a 1-in-1000 chance of winning.
The 2024 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal baubles are also still available for purchase at the Bundaberg Council service centre on Bourbong Street.
The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is proudly supported by major sponsor Auswide Bank.

The locally-established bank has pledged $25,000 per year in 2024 and 2025 to support the annual appeal that raises funds to provide hampers, gifts and vouchers to Bundaberg Region residents in need during Christmas.
Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Helen Blackburn said the generous contribution would do a lot of good in the local community.
“Auswide Bank’s support will help hundreds of households across the community to have food and gifts this Christmas,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Times are tough for many so we’re rallying together as a community and providing support to the charities who provide hampers and gift cards to those in need.
“A helping hand at this time of year to provide the treats and festive food can make all the difference but it’s knowing that, as a community, we come together in support of those in need which makes the real impact.
“We are grateful to have Auswide Bank’s ongoing support for the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and this certainty over the next two years that we can meet our fundraising targets.”
Auswide Bank Chief Customer Officer Damian Hearne said the organisation was honoured to join the appeal.
“As an organisation with deep roots to the Bundaberg community, we’re honoured to support the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal and help bring some joy to families doing it tough this holiday season,” Damian said.
“Christmas should be a time of togetherness and hope, and we’re proud to play a part in making that possible for those who need it most.”
Funds raised through the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal will be distributed to charity partners to dispense to the community.
This year’s charity partners are the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Bundaberg, St Vincent de Paul Childers, Angels Community Group and Citicoast Pantry, in addition to the Council-run Childers and Gin Gin Neighbourhood Centres.

Now in its fifth year, the Christmas Charity Car and Bike Run sees vehicle enthusiasts from across the region gather together for a cruise along the coastline, ending in a family friendly gathering on the Elliott Heads foreshore.
This year’s run will be held on Sunday 15 December and will feature vehicles of all types, with prizes for best dressed person, car and bike.
Organiser and Shift Automotive co-owner Kirstin Trimble said the event was an amazing way to help the community.
“We love how our community really shows up and bands together every year for this event,” Kirstin said.
“Supporting our community is important to us at Shift Automotive but especially at Christmas time.
“If we can help some local families have a brighter, merrier Christmas, that’s a very special thing.”
The event will raise funds on the day through a number of raffles with prizes donated by local businesses.
“We will be selling raffle tickets on the day for some amazing prizes,” Kirstin said.
“All proceeds go to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal to get those hampers to people who need them at Christmas.
“This will help relieve some Christmas stress for local families.”
Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Helen Blackburn said she was grateful Shift Automotive was supporting the appeal again this year.
“This is a fantastic annual event for the region’s car and bike enthusiasts to rally together and show their support for the community,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“The funds raised will enable our local charity partners to help even more people in need in the community.”

The charity car and bike run will be held on Sunday 15 December, with cruise attendees gathering at 7 am at Shift Automotive, 1 Turner Street, Bundaberg.

A collaboration between Bundaberg Services Club and Takalvans, the raffle offers ticket holders a one-in-one-thousand chance of snagging the major prize, a New Age Manta Ray MR16E 2024 model, valued at $69,990.
Tickets will now be on sale until Easter, or until sold out, with just 1,000 tickets available.
Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Helen Blackburn said the extension of the draw date would greatly benefit next year’s appeal tally.
“This year’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal tally has been finalised, as we like to give our charity partners plenty of time to disperse the hampers and gift vouchers to those in need,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Extending the caravan raffle ticket sales will give more people a chance to enter and raise even more for our community for next Christmas.
“With fantastic odds, a ticket in the raffle would make a great Christmas present for anyone who’d love to get out and about in a brand-new caravan.
“It’s an ambitious fundraiser, and we want to ensure the community gets the full benefit of this generous prize offering.”
Mayor Blackburn said this year’s Christmas Appeal had met fundraising goals without taking into account the raffle sales.
“We have raised over $58,000 for local charities this year in a tremendous show of Christmas spirit by so many in our community,” she said.
“This will provide much needed hampers and vouchers for people doing it tough and help them enjoy the holiday season with friends and family.”
Caravan raffle tickets will be on sale at Pageant of Lights, outside the Bundaberg Regional Council Administration building in Bourbong Street, on Thursday 5 December.
Tickets are currently available from Bundaberg Services Club on Quay Street and will be available from Bundaberg Services Club temporary location at Bundaberg Rowers Club, 2 Toonburra Street, in the new year.
Bundaberg Services Club has contacted current ticket holders to advise them of the change.

This year’s bauble was a collaboration between Bundaberg Regional Council, local artist Carmel Birchley, Sunshine Mitre 10 and Maki Print.
Bundaberg Art Society members were invited to submit a Christmas bauble design to Council, with Carmel’s artwork selected by Mayor Helen Blackburn for the limited edition decoration.
Carmel said she was humbled by the honour of her artwork being used for such a worthy cause.
Proceeds from the sale of baubles support the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.
“I hope the bauble design will encourage generosity of mind and in kind,” Carmel said.
“The Star of Bethlehem is a reminder of the reason for Christmas celebrations.
“Singing to uplift the spirits of both man and our feathered friends carrying the message of Joy and Peace – a message more important now than ever before in our lifetime.”
Mayor Blackburn said the collaboration between the community and Council to create the bauble embodied the spirit of the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.
“The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is about community supporting community,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Featuring a local artist’s design on the bauble is a wonderful way of celebrating the region’s creative community while also raising funds for those in need.
“Sunshine Mitre 10 generously donated the plyboard and Maki Print expertly etched the design, creating a wonderful ornament that will certainly be going up on my tree this year!”
Community members can snap up their 2024 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal bauble for $10.
It will be on sale exclusively at Mumma’s Nest Christmas Markets, 29 to 30 November at the Bundaberg Multiplex, and at Bundaberg Regional Council Service Centre in Bourbong Street, Bundaberg.
Childers and Gin Gin residents who would like to purchase a bauble can order them through Childers Neighbourhood Centre or Gin Gin Neighbourhood Centre.
All proceeds from the sale of the bauble support the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, raising funds to provide hampers, gifts and vouchers to local residents in need at Christmas.

Owners Karen and Andy Christiansen said the company increased its sponsorship this year, with Christmas the ideal time to support the local community.
“We have supported the appeal for several years now and we continue to do so as we believe it is very important to give back to the community in which we live and work,” Karen said.
“Charitable giving is an extremely important part of our company and overall business ideals.
“Our community supports us, and this is just one of the ways in which we give back to our community.”

Bundaberg Regional Council partners with local charities to fund hampers, vouchers and gifts for those most in need.
Karen said she encouraged other local businesses to consider how they can support the appeal if they are able to, even if it was in a small way.
“This time of the year is when our community needs to pull together so we can spread a little festive cheer for everyone,” she said.
“I have such a soft spot for Christmas, so this one tugs on the heart strings just a little more.
“Our company believes that supporting those that need it the most, during what is meant to be a festive season for all, is a very worthy endeavour.”
Mayor Helen Blackburn said she was grateful to have the continued support of the appeal from The Optical Superstore.
“It’s wonderful to have The Optical Superstore on board again this year,” Mayor Blackburn said.

The paintings, Pintjamu (The Sun), Ngamai (To Hunt) and Wani-Wani Watina (To Swim Side by Side), were auctioned at the Mayor’s Beach Ball in August, with the proceeds of the auction helping to provide support to locals in need of extra help during the festive season.
The creative family said having the opportunity to give back to the community at Christmas was really special.
“It is the season of giving so it’s a fantastic time to help out and try and do our part to help people in the community,” Brooke said.
“It’s really, really special to us that people were willing to give money for an artwork that we created for such a special event.”
Cher’nee said supporting charitable causes like the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal was very important to their family.
“We’ve given back to community in Bundaberg a lot of times before, but this is the first time we donated to that specific event,” Cher’nee said.
“It’s an amazing cause and it’s something that we all need to help out with, so I definitely would encourage people to either donate time or money or whatever it is they can to help out.
“Something that I’ve always said since I’ve first started painting was imagine our world if everyone just gave a little something, it would be a much, much better place.”
The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal raises funds to be distributed by charity partners to provide hampers, vouchers and gifts to residents in need at Christmas.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the generosity of sponsors and donors had increased, as had the number of people in need in the community.
“So far this year the appeal has raised just over $50,000, which will allow us to help 500 people or families in the community,” she said.
“We know cost of living pressures continue to affect many people, and I am very grateful to our donors and sponsors, like the wonderful Sutton family, for their generous support.”
