Woodgate Beach erosion prevention begins

30 May 2024

Action against erosion at Woodgate Beach has begun as Bundaberg Regional Council commences much needed sand nourishment works and the construction of a rock wall.

Work has started at a section of impacted beach south of the Woodgate boat ramp.

Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn said the project was part of a Shoreline Erosion Management Plan (SEMP) which aimed to protect the foreshore land vulnerable to erosion.

The plan answers community pleas for action to replenish the shoreline, prevent future erosion, and address the root causes,” she said

“With State Government permits now obtained, work can begin towards safeguarding Woodgate Beach’s coastline.”

The plan's goals include:

  • Erosion management aligned with community expectations
  • Investigation of shoreline erosion causes and future trends
  • Cost-effective erosion management strategies

The sand nourishment project will cover a 700-metre stretch south of the boat ramp with plans to extend further towards Second Avenue, pending future State Government permits.

Additionally, a rock wall will be built on either side of the boat ramp and will be buried under half a metre of sand to maintain the beach's natural appearance.

This will be complemented by an ongoing maintenance plan as part of a broader coastal management strategy.

Local Councillor Bill Trevor said addressing the longstanding issue of beach erosion in the area was a priority.

“The erosion at Woodgate Beach has been a persistent problem and we're taking proactive measures to protect the coastline,” he said.

“Council has spoken directly to nearby residents and the local community to gain a better understanding of the historic issue and provide solutions and future-proofing for the area.”

LCB Civil Pty Ltd has been appointed as the Principal Contractor for the works.

The project is expected to be complete by mid-December 2024, depending on weather conditions.

Beach access restrictions will be in place around the immediate work site.

“This comprehensive project will ensure that Woodgate Beach remains a vibrant and resilient community hub, balancing the need for erosion control with the preservation of natural coastal processes.”

Woodgate SEMP has been partly funded by the State Government's North Queensland Natural Disaster Mitigation Program.
