March 2025 Project Update

Work for the construction of the Hughes Road / Blain Street roundabout is progressing well. Detours and signage remain in place to inform and direct road users to alternate routes. The businesses on Hughes Road remain open and can be accessed by turning on to Seaview Road from Bargara Road then from the southern end of Hughes Road at the Wessels / Watsons Road intersection.

Works to date have included:

  • Installation works for the new conduits to accommodate Ergon infrastructure was completed by 14 March, with the trench backfilled and ready for Ergon to commence their work.
  • Ergon have attended the site and installed two (2) new power poles as well as the new high voltage cabling required underground.
  • A substantial amount of work has been undertaken by the Civil Contractor with the roadway now taking shape. Base material has been put in place and compacted to industry standards.
  • The current wet weather we are experiencing has resulted in small delays.

All works are subject to weather conditions.

February 2025 Project Update

The full road closure of a section of Hughes Road is currently in place and construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Hughes Road / Blain Street has now commenced.

The relocation of services is to be carried out from end of January to end of February and this will include, installation of Ergon conduits, cabling and removal of power poles, Telstra relocations and the realignment and relocation of water main. Road closures will be in place for a period of 2 weeks (dates to be confirmed) while these works are being carried out.

The Civil works component is intended to commence beginning of March, this will include an extended period of time that there will be a road closure in place while works are being carried out. The expected completion date is mid-June 2025.

Council encourages all road users to seek alternate route and apologises for any inconvenience that these road closures may cause.

Project Background

The Hughes Road/Blain Street intersection upgrade project will be delivered as part of the Bundaberg Regional Council 2024/2025 budget.

The project was identified as part of the Bargara Emerging Communities Infrastructure Planning (ECIP) project which won an Institute of Public Works Australasia (QNT) Innovation and Sustainability in Water award and a Stormwater Queensland Excellence in Strategic or Master Planning award in 2023.

The intersection will be upgraded to a roundabout in response to the ongoing development along Hughes Road and, in particular, the planned extension of Blain Street further west.

A roundabout in this location ensures a safe intersection for all road users and will specifically feature safe crossings for pedestrians and cyclists to ensure connectivity for active modes of transport between new development and the township of Bargara.

Business Access

Council is committed to working with businesses along Hughes Road to minimise disruption and give safe access to staff, suppliers and customers.
