George/Targo Street Intersection and Culvert Upgrade
Bundaberg Regional Council wishes to advise residents and local businesses of upcoming construction works to facilitate safety improvement and asset renewal projects in George Street, and at the intersection of George Street and Targo Street, commencing later this year.
Staging plan: George and Targo Street Intersection UpgradeStage 1: George Street Culvert Renewal
Expected to be undertaken from late September 2026 to December 2026, weather permitting.
The large box culverts over Saltwater Creek are due for renewal as part of Council’s ongoing asset management program.
New box culverts (currently stored nearby at Stewarts Park on Targo Street) at will be installed, replacing the existing deteriorated units before pavement is re-instated with new footpath and fencing to provide compliant and safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists.
The George Street Culvert Renewal is jointly funded by Bundaberg Regional Council and the Queensland Government.

Stage 2: George Street and Targo Street Intersection Upgrade
Expected to be undertaken from mid-January 2027 to late April 2027, weather permitting.
The roundabout upgrade addresses several recommendations that were identified in a recent Road Safety Audit of the existing intersection.
The proposed works will improve visibility for motorists across the intersection by re-aligning the central island, as well as improved entry/exit paths. With new pathways and raised wombat crossings providing safe passage and improved visibility for pedestrians and cyclists navigating the intersection.
The George and Targo Street Intersection Upgrade is funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.

What's ahead
Council acknowledges that the work will have a significant impact to pedestrians and cyclists, as well as motorists, particularly during Stage 2, due to the high volume of vehicles using this route each day.
Traffic and pedestrian management will be in place throughout the project, with local access maintained to ensure residents can continue to access their properties and waste collection services are maintained.
Local businesses will remain open and accessible throughout construction.
All roads will be open to traffic from early December 2026 to early January 2027 for the holiday period, with every effort to be taken to minimise disruption to local businesses.
VMS Boards will be installed ahead of construction to notify motorists of upcoming changes to traffic conditions.
Further project updates will be provided via social media and Council’s project webpage once the contractor has been appointed and a construction start date has been confirmed.
